John Cowper Powys (; 8 October – 17 June ) was a British novelist, lecturer, philosopher, literary critic, and gh Powys published a collection of poems in and his first novel in , he did not gain success as a writer until he published the novel Wolf Solent in He was influenced by many writers, but he has been particularly seen as a successor .   The law was weighted against any author who dared to set his work in a contemporary setting or used names which might be those of real people. As a result this book was reissued in an expurgated form in the UK, under the new title Jobber Skald (). It didn't reappear in full there until the late : Dr Jack Ross.
